The hurricanes of my generation—Betsy (’65), Camille (’69), Andrew (’92), Katrina (’05), Rita (’05), Gustav (’08), Ike (’08)—still evoke memories of their impact and remind us how nature can transform our lives and place. A box of nearly forgotten photographs renewed my affection for New Orleans and its people and became another book about Hurricane Katrina. There are likely thousands more images waiting to be found that represent residents’ experiences; some may yet come to light like those in this book. In an introductory essay and more than a hundred photographs, this book presents an experience of destruction and transformation—both personal and communal—begun by the storm. The book is available here.
