My process for abstract painting differs from realist work: there’s no reference to guide me. To overcome that intimidation, many artists—including me—start by getting something on the canvas to break the ice, following the initial inspiration that prompts the work. For me that inspiration comes from old walls, graffiti, and layers of torn broadsides pasted on public surfaces—walls, telephone poles, traffic signs. I’m not trying to probe anything profound; the finished painting simply has to appeal to me—decorative, inviting, and accessible. Richard Diebenkorn and Paula Landrum of New Orleans both inspire me to pursue abstract painting when juices run dry for painting figures in loose realism.
